Comic Book Bags - Mylar, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene

An experienced event coordinator, Stephen Shamus has helped put on more than 175 comic conventions. The president of A-List Talent and ACE Universe, he has secured appearances from such big names as Tom Hiddleston, Stan Lee, and Chris Evans. Stephen Shamus also co-created several products with Ultra Pro, a company that sells storage products for cards, collectibles, and comics.

Most collectors store comic books using some type of protective bag and board. There are three main types of comic book bags. Following is a brief description of each type:

Polypropylene: This is the cheapest bag available, though some suppliers, concerned by the low quality, don’t sell them. Polypropylene bags appear glossy and are very clear, so they make comics look very nice. Unfortunately, they are prone to tearing, and they begin to yellow after about three to eight years.

Mylar: Comic bags made from mylar last for several decades. They are thicker than both polyethylene and polypropylene bags and are more resistant to carbon dioxide, oxygen, and other gases. Many collectors view mylar bags as archival in nature and use them for longer term comic storage.

Polyethylene: These types of bags last longer than polypropylene bags, but not as long as mylar bags. They must be changed every decade or so. They are milky in color, which lets in less light but may not help the comic stand out as much. However, polyethylene bags are less prone to tearing than polypropylene bags and attract less dirt and dust.

2017’s Top Comics Include Milton Adaptation and Batman

Having planned hundreds of comic con events over the years, Stephen Shamus is a respected industry presence who heads A-List Talent and arranges appearances at major events. In addition, Stephen Shamus enjoys collecting original illustrations.

A recent Vulture article has drawn attention to the top graphic novels and comic book collections of 2017. Number nine on the list is Gary Panter’s Songy of Paradise. Including influences such as Javanese art, the ambitious graphic novel is an adaptation of John Milton’s poetic classic, Paradise Regained, and casts a country “hick,” Songy, in the role of Jesus. Connoisseurs of Panter’s adaptations of Western classics are bound to enjoy this work, which Vulture describes as portraying expansive and crude vistas and unforgettable and hideous character designs.

Item number seven on Vulture’s list is Tom King’s Batman: The War of Jokes and Riddles, which uses the well-worn tropes of the Dark Knight universe to create something fresh and cinematic. The artists, including colorist, June Chung, and penciller, Mikel Janín, make a huge impression.

Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot Break Records with Wonder Woman

Over the course of his career as the world’s longest tenured Comic Con showrunner, Stephen Shamus has helmed nearly 200 events. During this time Stephen Shamus has worked with a number of recognizable performers, including Gal Gadot and Chris Evans.

Over the course of the summer of 2017, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman far surpassed box office predictions as it shattered a variety of industry records. Released in June, the Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment picture grossed over $412 million in the United States and nearly $410 million abroad for a total gross of about $822 million. Headed by Gal Gadot in the titular role, Wonder Woman resulted in the biggest opening weekend for a female director ever, taking in $100 million domestically and another $100 million in foreign markets. The film’s strong start came thanks in part to a 94 percent approval rating from Cinemascore, placing Jenkins' and Gadot’s work on par with The Dark Knight and Iron Man as the best reviewed superhero movies of all time.
